What to bring with the vehicle.
Verification takes a few minutes. Having the paperwork with you means we can go straight into the registration or transfer afterwards.
Trailers, motorcycles and specialty vehicles are all fine. If it has a VIN, we can verify it.
- The vehicle itself, driven or towed to the office
- The title or registration, from whichever state it's currently in

When You Need a VIN Verification
A VIN Verification confirms the vehicle in front of the examiner matches the documents presented for it. It is recorded on form REG 31.
Most people need one because they have brought a vehicle in from another state. It also comes up for vehicles that have been off the road a long time, for some Title Transfers, and for rebuilt or specially constructed vehicles.

Drive or tow the vehicle over during opening hours with the title or current registration and your ID. The inspection takes a few minutes and there is no appointment. Trailers, motorcycles and specialty vehicles are all fine. A damaged or missing VIN plate becomes a CHP matter, and we will tell you where to go.
Because we are a full registration office, the verification does not have to be the end of the visit. Most people getting one are partway through a larger job, and we can carry straight on into the conversion or the transfer the same afternoon.
If someone has handed you a form and told you to get a VIN verification, bring the form with you. We will complete the right part of it rather than sending you back to ask which section they meant.
