How it works

Come in, walk out with it.

1

Tell us what's missing

Sticker, plate, registration card, or all three. Bring your ID and the plate number.

2

We reissue it

Processed here at the counter. There's a DMV fee for the replacement, which we'll tell you up front.

3

Back on your car

Put the new sticker on and you're legal again.

Before you come in

What to bring.

Replacements are one of the quickest things we do. If your sticker was stolen, mention it, as that changes the form.

If the plates themselves were stolen, file a police report first and bring the report number with you.

  • Your photo ID
  • The licence plate number
  • Your registration card if you still have it
  • Payment for the replacement fee
Common questions

Questions we get every day.

Someone peeled my sticker off the plate.
Sticker theft is common in San Diego. Come in with your ID and plate number and we'll issue a replacement the same day. Mention it was stolen so the paperwork is right.
My registration never came in the mail.
Usually the address on file is out of date. We can reissue the card and update your address at the same time so it doesn't happen next year.
Both plates were stolen.
File a police report first. Bring the report number and we'll issue new plates with a new number, then update the registration to match.
Can I get a replacement if my registration is expired?
You'd renew and take the current sticker at the same time, which is usually cheaper than doing both separately. We'll sort out which applies when you come in.
Good to know

Stolen stickers are a San Diego problem

Sticker theft leaves you driving on a plate that looks expired even though your registration is current. We reissue at the counter, usually in a few minutes.

Bring photo ID and the plate number. Say it was stolen rather than lost, because that changes the form. For Replacement License Plates, file a police report first and bring the report number: new plates come with a new number and the record has to be updated to match.

If your registration is close to expiring anyway, renewing and taking the current sticker is often cheaper than paying for a replacement now and renewing weeks later. Bring the plate number and we will work out which way round costs you less.

A duplicate registration card is the simplest of the three, and people need one more often than you would think. It is almost always an old address sitting on the DMV record, so we will offer to correct that while you are here rather than watch the same thing happen next year.

If the sticker was stolen, it is worth adding a set of sticker guards afterwards. Thieves take them because they peel in seconds and go unnoticed for weeks, and a second theft usually follows the first.
