What it costs, published plainly.

Two numbers sit on every DMV job: what the state charges, and what we charge to handle it. Most places won't tell you either until you're at the counter. Ours are below, the same list that hangs on the wall in the office.

These are our service fees only. The state's own registration fees sit on top and are set by Sacramento: they depend on the vehicle, its value, your county and whether anything is overdue. No office can discount those. Call us with your plate number and we'll tell you the full figure, both parts, before you drive over.
Why the DMV part varies

What actually changes the state's number.

  • How late it is. Penalties build the longer a registration sits expired.
  • The vehicle's value. Part of the California fee is based on it.
  • Where you live. Some counties add district fees.
  • Holds on the record. Unpaid tickets or tolls have to clear first.
  • Smog. If one is due, that's a separate cost at a testing station.

Why the state's number moves

Two numbers sit on every job: what California charges, and what we charge to process it. Nobody can discount the first one.

Registration Fees are built from a base fee, a licence fee calculated on the vehicle's value, a CHP fee, and often county or district fees. Two identical cars registered in different counties can owe different amounts.

Late renewal adds penalties that step up over time, so a renewal left a year costs noticeably more than the same one handled on time. Holds from unpaid citations or tolls have to clear first, and those amounts are set by whoever placed them. Call with your plate and we will tell you the full figure in about a minute.

There is one cost people forget to budget for entirely, and that is the smog check itself. It is paid to a licensed testing station rather than to the DMV or to us, and if the vehicle fails, repairs come before the registration can complete.

Asking whether a smog is due before you spend anything is the cheapest phone call in this process, and it is the one most people skip. It takes us under a minute to look up.
